Discover the World of Slab-Built Ceramics

Inspired by the tranquility of the nearby moorlands and the ruggedness of the Yorkshire coast, Stuart creates unique and stunning stoneware ceramics.

Handcrafted Stoneware

Each and every piece of ceramics made by Stuart Gadd is lovingly handcrafted and designed with a strong emphasis on slab-built stoneware.

Unique Pieces

Stuart creates unique and one-of-a-kind pieces of ceramics that showcase his skill and passion for the craft.

Slab-Built Ceramics Using Stoneware Clay

Stuart Gadd combines his love of gardening, allotments, and moorlands into his artistic creations. He also finds inspiration from beach-combing on the Yorkshire coast, incorporating found objects like zips, buttons, and fishing line into his work.

Splits and closures made with found items

In his work, Stuart is inspired by time spent in his garden, on his allotment and by the ever-present and gloriously bleak moorlands. The occasional escape to the Yorkshire coast, with the requisite beach-combing, also finds him making “split” pieces with closures implementing found items like zips, buttons and fishing line.

What I Do

I create beautifully unique slab-built ceramics, using stoneware clay and inspired by gardens, moorlands, and the coast.

Hand-Built…

It’s of great importance to my practice that every piece I make is an individually made, unique, one-of-a-kind treasure. Therefore, each form is slab-built by me and then hand-decorated.

…And Hand-Decorated

I like to explore shape, colour and texture using found items and my own slips and glazes. This allows me to add additional form and texture to the surface, with my works no longer just visual and/or functional items, but also having a tactile element to each piece.

With My Own Glazes

I’ve always had a passion for glazes, due to my background as a chemistry teacher, but in recent years this has continued to grow. I now develop and test new recipes all the time, using raw materials and creating glazes to suit the individuality of my pots.

CREATING Smaller Works

Many of my pots are quite small-scale, often no more than ten to fifteen centimetres high. Even at this size, there is scope to play with glazes, slips and other decoration making them fun for me to make, and a pleasure for you to own.

…AND Larger Pieces

I also work on larger pots, seeing how far I can take them. Successful decoration before the clay becomes too dry is occasionally tricky, so working on a bigger scale creates it’s own challenge. Working on a large form will take me days rather than hours, but still requires attention to each element so I can  create a coherent whole.
