Artist Statement
Stuart Gadd lives and works in West Yorkshire, surrounded by moors and other breath-taking scenery. He worked for 35 years as a teacher and then Head of Sixth Form, but is now quietly retired and happily making ceramics. He makes use of his background in chemistry by creating his own slips and glazes.
In his work, Stuart is inspired by time spent in his garden, on his allotment and by the ever-present and gloriously bleak moorlands. With this in mind he creates slab-built ceramics, using only stoneware clay, which reflect these inspirations. The occasional escape to the Yorkshire coast, with the requisite beach-combing, also finds him making “split” pieces with closures implementing found items like zips, buttons and fishing line.
